Tabernaemontana africana (Samoan Gardenia) 5.5 inch square pot
Common Names: Cinnamon gardenia, Samoan gardenia. Family: Apocynaceae. This African shrub has white very fragrant flowers with petals that curl back. Deep green leaves. Thrives in Hawaii and blooms several times per year. Use a slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Full sun in humid climates but may require some protection in hot dry areas. Fertlize several times per year with a fertlizer that contains micronutrients. Plant grown in heavy shade may not flower much. Easy to grow in warm humid climates. Outdoors in Zones 10B to 11. Not a gardenia and not from Samoa; this is a prime example of why common names are not very useful. This species was formerly classified as Tabernaemontana holstii.
