Piper methysticum (kava) 5.5 inch square pot
Common Names: Kava, awa. Perennial tropical herb related to pepper. Plants can reach 6 or 7 ft. tall. Full sun to medium shade. Rich well drained soil. The roots and underground portion of the stem base is used. Roots are harvested from 3 year old (or older) plants. Grown at low elevations through the Pacific islands. May be container grown in a greenhouse. Must be protected from cool temperatures. Rahmadel is a green stemmed clone originating in Micronesia. Hina is from Tonga and has a spotted stem. Issa is from Papua New Guinea and is very disease resistant. We are running behind on kava propagation in 2010 due to cool weather in the spring.
