Piper methysticum (kava) 5.5 inch square pot
Common Names: Kava, awa. Perennial tropical herb related to pepper. Roots are extracted in cold water for a soothing drink. Used in stead of alcohol throughout the Pacific. Anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties. Plants can reach 6 to 8 ft. tall. Older stems become somewhat woody. Full sun to medium shade; full sun is tolerated in very humid conditions. In areas with low humidity, full sun may burn kava. Rich well drained soil. The roots and underground portion of the stem base is used. Roots are harvested from 3 year old (or older) plants. Grown at low elevations through the Pacific islands. May be container grown in a greenhouse. Must be protected from cool temperatures. We are primarliy propagating Issa which is a cultivar from Papua New Guinea and is very disease resistant. We periodically may have a few Mo'i, Honokane Iki, Opihikao and Rahmadel.
