Oenocarpus mapora (5.5 inch square pots)
Clumping species with elegant pinnate leaves. Pendant medium to dark green leaflets. Whitish trunks up to 6 inches in diameter. 1 inch dark purplish fruits are reported to be edible. Native to lowland rain forest from Costa Rica to Ecuador and Bolivia. Most Oenocarpus species take several years to develop a trunk. Young plants may need some shade but mature plants can take full sun. Warm humid conditions. Slightly acid soil high in organic matter. Use palm fertilizer several times per year for optimum growth. Outdoors in Zones 10B to 11. Can be maintained in a container for many years. Plants are shipped when the rootball fills the container. Be prepared to repot into 10 or 12 inch pots.
