Oenocarpus bataua
Common Name: bataua palm. Large South American palm with edible purple fruit. Mature plants make a very nice landscaping subject in the tropics. It can be maintained in a container for a number of years in a large greenhouse or sun room. Growth rates are moderate. It takes several years for a trunk to develop. In young plants the leaves are held erect and seem to erupt from the ground. Rich soil high in organic matter. Fertilize regularly for best growth. This palm likes lots of water and does not like to dry out. Outdoors in Zones 10B to 11.
