Mauritia flexuosa (4x4x10 inch tree pot)
Large fan palm with thick smooth trunk. Large fruits have a thin layer of edible flesh. Dioecious (male and female blooms occur on separate plants). Male and female plants look identical except when in bloom or fruit. Native to low elevation rain forest in South America. Typically found in marshes and swamps. This striking palm likes lots of water and steady supply of nutrients. Warm humid conditions are best. Can be maintained in large pots for a number of years. It is fast growing under ideal conditions. Full sun is tolerated even by young plants. Mauritia palms do not like dry windy conditions. Outdoors in frost free areas.
