Gardenia carinata (5.5 inch square pot) Tree Gardenia
Common Name: Tree Gardenia. Family: Rubiaceae. Small to medium tree native to Malaysia and Indonesia. Large flowers are about 4.5 inches in diameter and open white. Flowers slowly turn orange over a several day period before falling off. The white flower photo is of a bloom that has just begun to open. The orange flower is about 2 or 3 days later. So a tree will have white, yellow and orange flowers. Blooms 3 or 4 times per year in Hawaii; although a few flowers can be seen on the tree most of the time. Nicely fragrance but not as strong as some gardenias. Full sun. Slightly acidic well drained soil. Fertilize with a balanced formula (15-15-15 or 10-10-10) with micro-nutrients. Iron and magnesium are required to maintain deep green color and vigorous growth. Plants established in the ground require little care in Hawaii. Due to its native equatorial distribution, I don't expect this species to tolerate cool temperatures. Gardenia plants shipped to the US mainland will have all leaves removed; USDA regulations.
